Connecting Local Communities Through Coliving, Remote Work and International Collaboration

What happens when a coliving project born in Sicily meets one of Japan's most inspiring community hubs? A partnership that goes far beyond an exchange of speakers or events. It is the beginning of a long-term collaboration built on a shared vision: using coliving, remote work, and international communities as tools for sustainable local development.

This October, Marco Traina, Founder of BeetCommunity, Italia Nomad Fest (INF) and COFO – Coliving Founders, will travel to Japan to represent the Italian ecosystem during Colive Fukuoka, bringing the experience developed in Italy to one of the countries facing some of the world's most pressing demographic challenges.

From Sicily to Japan: Different Countries, the Same Challenge

Although Italy and Japan are thousands of kilometres apart, they share remarkably similar realities. Both countries are experiencing:

Depopulation of smaller towns and rural areas.
Aging populations.
Migration of young people towards large cities.
The gradual disappearance of local traditions, businesses and cultural heritage.

At BeetCommunity and Italia Nomad Fest, we believe these challenges should not only be discussed—they should be addressed through concrete action. Our experience has shown that coliving and remote work can become powerful tools for sustainable local regeneration. By welcoming remote professionals from around the world, communities don't simply receive visitors—they welcome temporary citizens who contribute with skills, ideas, relationships and cultural exchange. This is the vision that connects our work in Italy with what Colive Fukuoka is building in Japan.

This year, the BeetCommunity team, also representing Italia Nomad Fest, has been invited to join Colive Fukuoka to share the Italian experience and explore how similar challenges are being addressed across continents. Marco Traina has been invited as a Co-Creator to contribute to two key sessions.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values

This collaboration began thanks to Haruka Ihara, whose participation in Italia Nomad Fest 2026 opened the door to a meaningful exchange between the two communities. Haruka played a key role in creating the connection that later brought Marco Traina and Ryo Osera, Co-founder of Colive Fukuoka, together during Bansko Nomad Fest, where they quickly discovered a remarkable alignment in both values and vision. Although they come from opposite sides of the world, Marco and Ryo realised they were working towards the same goal: using coliving and remote work not simply to attract international professionals, but to create lasting connections that generate positive social, cultural and economic impact for local communities. Both believe that coliving is far more than accommodation. It is a platform for cultural exchange, community building and sustainable territorial development. They also share the conviction that international mobility should not simply move people from one destination to another, but should create genuine relationships between local communities and global professionals.

This shared vision has become the foundation of a long-term collaboration between BeetCommunity and Colive Fukuoka, with the ambition to co-create projects, connect their communities directly and build opportunities that extend far beyond individual events. Because the strongest partnerships are not built around commercial agreements—they are built on common values, mutual trust and the willingness to create something that neither organisation could achieve alone.

More Than a Partnership: Building Bridges Between Communities

This collaboration represents more than an invitation to speak at an international event. It is the beginning of a long-term relationship between two organisations that believe international communities can play an active role in addressing local challenges. While BeetCommunity has the honour of representing the Italian ecosystem in Japan this October, the exchange will continue next March, when the Colive Fukuoka team will travel to Palermo to participate in the second edition of Italia Nomad Fest. There, they will experience Italian culture firsthand, meet local institutions, entrepreneurs and community builders, while continuing the dialogue that began in 2026. This reciprocal exchange reflects what both organisations believe: the future of international communities is built through collaboration, shared experiences and mutual learning.

Looking Ahead

The ambition of this collaboration goes beyond two organisations or two events. Together, BeetCommunity, Italia Nomad Fest, Colive Fukuoka and the wider COFO – Coliving Founders network aim to strengthen connections between coliving spaces, remote professionals and local communities across the world. By sharing experiences, research, best practices and people, we believe we can develop projects that generate lasting social value while helping communities remain vibrant, welcoming and resilient. Rather than measuring success only through economic growth, we believe success can also be found in preserving local culture, creating opportunities for meaningful exchange and transforming visitors into active contributors to community life. Our hope is that this partnership will inspire many more collaborations between communities across continents and, perhaps one day, evolve into a co-created international event connecting Italy, Japan and many other countries around a shared purpose.

More importantly, we hope this is only the first step in building a stronger international network of communities that actively collaborate instead of competing.
